Spending the Most Cherished and the Best Thing for the Sake of Allah

We are asked to spend the things that we like the most for the sake of Allah. But in reality, can we follow or practice this advice? Rarely we give things that we love the most... Normally, we just gave unwanted things to the others!

"Ye will not attain unto piety until ye spend of that which ye love." (Ali 'Imran; 92)

"O ye who believe! Spend of the good things which ye have earned, and of that which we bring forth from the earth for you, and seek not the bad (with intent) to spend thereof (in charity)." (Al-Baqarah; 267)

Here is a hadith taken from Riyadh-us-saleheen about the issue.

"Anas bin Malik (RA) relates that Abu Talha (RA) was the richest person among the Ansars in Madinah so far as landed property and date gardens were concerned. He liked his garden of Bairaha the best of all his properties. It was just in front of the Mosque of the Holy Prophet (SAW). The Holy Prophet (SAW) used to visit this garden and drank its sweet water.

When the verse cited above was revealed: (Ali 'Imran; 92), Abu Talha (RA) went to the Holy Prophet (SAW) and submitted: 'Messenger of Allah! Allah has sent down to you this verse, (Ye will not attain piety until ye spend of that which ye love) and the property I like most is Bairaha. I, therefore, offer it in charity for the pleasure of Allah, hoping for its recompense from Him. You may dispose it of, as Allah might direct you.

The Holy Prophet (SAW) said: 'Well, well, this is a very profitable property, this is a very profitable property. I have heard what you have said, and I think you should divide it among your relatives.' Abu Talha (RA) said: 'So shall I do, Messenger of Allah!' and he divided it among his cousins and relatives."
